CARITAS MAURITANIE

SAHEL - MAURITANIE

Caritas Mauritania  was founded in 1972. The activities of Caritas Mauritania have evolved over the years depending on the humanitarian context. Its projects target food security, community integration, and access to income-generating activities. Training is the basis of integrated local (or neighbourhood) development including community organisation, literacy, vocational initiation and training, and planning. Caritas Mauritania favours local support, with decentralised animation teams in the intervention areas. The stakeholders (beneficiary populations, local authorities) are involved in a participatory manner in the identification of needs, reflection on the responses to be provided, and implementation and evaluation.

The project intervention areas are the M’Bout department and the Boghé department in Brakna South, both of which are part of the poorest areas of Mauritania.

The project focuses on the following activities:

  • Training on the links between sustainable land management, climate change and food security for the benefit of members of the offices of family market gardening cooperatives and on agro ecological techniques and practices, on agroforestry practices, on interactions between agriculture, livestock breeding, and agroforestry in the context of climate change
  • Research and experimentation on climate-resilient seeds and development of technical references for climate-resilient seeds
  • Carrying out a diagnostic study on agro-ecological knowledge and practices.

Caritas Mauritania also participates in the transversal activities of the Agro Ecology Program for the Sahel at the regional level through networking for the exchange of experiences, training, valorisation of knowledge, communication and advocacy on the agro ecological transition.
